Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance

Short-Term Disability Insurance – Voluntary (VSTD)
The Voluntary STD benefit provides you with 60% of your income, up to a maximum of $3,000 per week, for up to 22 weeks, after 30 days of disability. All full-time faculty and staff with less than two years of benefit eligible service and part-time faculty and staff* are eligible to participate. Your benefit payment may be reduced if you receive Social Security or other income supplements while you are disabled.

*Part-time staff have a six-month waiting period to be eligible to enroll in voluntary short-term disability benefits.

If you choose not to enroll in voluntary short-term disability during your new hire enrollment period, but enroll at a later time, you will be required to provide evidence of insurability (EOI). Coverage is dependent upon Unum, our disability administrator, approving your EOI.

Short-Term Disability Insurance - GW Paid (STD)
The GW Paid STD benefit provides you with either 50% or 100% of your benefits eligible salary, depending on years of benefits eligible service, for up to 24 weeks after 14 days of disability. All full-time faculty and staff with two or more years of benefit eligible service will be automatically enrolled in the corresponding STD plan. Your benefit payment upon STD claim approval may be reduced if you receive Social Security or other income supplements while you are disabled.

Once you become eligible for the GW Short-Term Disability benefit, you will be auto-enrolled in the benefit effective the first of the month following your anniversary date. If you are enrolled in the employee paid Voluntary Short-Term Disability plan, the voluntary benefit would end upon reaching benefits eligibility for the GW Paid Short-Term Disability benefit.
